Since leaving behind a career as a corporate attorney in order to pursue stand-up comedy, Jocelyn Chia has been making her mark in the spotlight. Hailing from Singapore until a move brought her stateside at 19 years old, Chia’s dreams have led to her comedic success internationally. Now, her comic rap sheet keeps growing and includes some impressive feats. She was a winner in the 2016 Ladies of Laughter Competition, guest-hosted MTV’s Uncommon Sense With Charlamagne tha God, and opened for Bill Burr in September 2021 at the West Side Comedy Club in NYC — just to name a few.

And comedy has always been in her blood. Speaking to Mumble Comedy in 2019, Chia felt encouragement and her comedic spark blossom from a program called She Creates For Change, sharing, “At the end of the program we had a ‘calling party’ where all the women got into a semi-circle, and one woman would sit in the middle. Everyone then called out what they thought her calling was based on what they knew of her. When it came to my turn, someone said, ‘Jocelyn, you are so so so funny. Every time you speak up I wait to see if people laugh, and they always do. I want to see you do stand-up comedy.’ And that’s how it all started.”

Since the beginning of COVID lockdowns in 2020, Chia was introduced to cannabis by a friend working in the industry, “She took me on my first ever trip to the dispensary and I got high out of my mind that night for the first time … I’ve been taking edibles ever since.”

Her favorites? Anything with a good CBD:THC ratio: “I personally take it to relax my muscles as I get back and jaw pain. I love the THC:CBD combinations. My doctor said adding a touch of THC to CBD products seems to make it more effective as it kinda makes the brain more receptive to the effects of the CBD.”

Chia’s even fallen in love due to cannabis — well, sort of. “I actually thought I fell in love for the first time in my life but turns out it was just cannabis — not love. I went on a date with this guy and he offered me an edible that was supposed to be very mild,” she shared. “This was in NYC where weed was legalized but not available for distribution yet, and he said [it] was more of a CBD [edible] as he could just buy it from the corner store and it wasn’t regulated. So I took two! Well, that night while making out, I got so high that I thought I must be falling in love. I had never been that high before in my entire life, but it really made me open up to him about me and my life and what I wanted in a relationship and it was an intense bonding experience. The next day I asked to see what the F did I take the night before — it was this product called Delta-8 that apparently has escaped regulation thus far but can really get you high.”

Currently in the midst of her West Coast Tour, Chia is delivering her stand-up in Los Angeles for the first time. Outside of that, you can see her perform regularly in New York, with myriad stand-up dates coming soon.

Jocelyn Chia’s favorite weed products

Chia originally got into weed when she was staying on the West Coast. “I am heavily influenced by my time in Oregon where I first discovered cannabis, and two out of three of the brands I use regularly are Oregon-based.”

Wyld Gummies

Wyld offers a plethora of gummies containing popular cannabinoid combinations and flavors. “I like Wyld’s CBD:THC combination gummies. So delicious!”

Available: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Oregon

Pure Craft CBD

“I also use Pure Craft’s water-soluble CBD, which uses nano-technology and allegedly gets absorbed faster by the body,” said Chia. You can find Pure Craft tinctures online.

Available: Nationwide

Dr. Jolly’s THC

To make her cannabis experience more well-rounded, Chia tends to use her CBD and THC products at the same time. “I like to add a couple of drops of Dr. Jolly’s THC to my [Pure Craft CBD] to activate the CBD as my doctor recommended.”

Available: Oregon
